Writing Major
Overview
In its curriculum and goals, the English Department emphasizes the need "to approve (value) the better things" in language, literature and writing. Because communication is essential in all aspects of today's world, the department strives to help students develop clear, accurate and effective communication skills. The writing and literature courses challenge students to think critically, to analyze, and to develop evaluative standards. Achieving these challenges in turn helps students increase their appreciation of literary style. The study of literature further enables students to expand their horizons, to understand the universals of the human condition, and to deepen their awareness of human nature in all its diversity.
