The Wolf of Gubbio
Stritch Wolves
The name of Stritch's athletic teams, the Wolves, reflects the Franciscan legend of the Wolf of Gubbio. The wolf was a ferocious killer terrorizing the Italian community of Gubbio that was turned into a friend of humans by St. Francis' love.
The wolf makes for a powerful athletic logo and mascot, but it also reminds us to challenge each other, in a caring, compassionate manner, to bring goodness to our community and our world. We give life to our mascot each time we make peace with one another and work together on social-justice issues.
The mascot was chosen through campus balloting in early 2001 and the logo was created by a Stritch graphic design student, Kurt Keckeisen. The Wolves replaced the Crusaders, a name that was adopted in 1983. Before that, the mascot was the Red Devils.
